THE HALA FOUNDATION FOR
ARAB-AMERICAN LEADERSHIP
The Hala Salaam Maksoud Foundation for Arab-American Leadership is the living legacy of one of the most significant and visionary Arab American leaders, Dr. Hala Salaam Maksoud. Hala was devoted to creating a better society for the next generation, both here in United States and in the Arab world, and nothing gave her greater satisfaction than in developing young talent and preparing it for leadership. Hala was a great teacher and mentor to dozens of young Arab Americans who went on to become important leaders in the community. Before her untimely passing, she established the Hala Foundation as an organization that would carry on her mission of educating and nurturing future generations of Arab-American leaders who would defend the rights and interests of the community, and help to make this country and the world a better place.
HALA’S MISSON AND THE NEED FOR NEW ARAB-AMERICAN LEADERSHIP
The Hala Foundation is dedicated to developing new Arab-American leaders. Hala always lamented the fact that, as she put it, “the Arab-American community has yet to develop levels of political and organization clout commensurate with the size and accomplishments of the community.” This challenge is more urgent than ever in the post-9/11 environment, in which civil liberties are threatened, civil rights abuses are on the rise, defamation against Arabs and Muslims is rampant, and the need for a balanced and constructive American policy towards the Middle East is more urgent than ever. Creating a new generation of leadership in the Arab-American community was Hala’s mission, and it is the goal of her legacy, the Hala Foundation.
